Tiny Desk, Big Voices
Jun 28, 2024
Wolf Trap’s 2024 lineup has it all, from up-and-coming country singers and psychedelic soul artists to rock icons and famous R&B stars. Many of this summer’s artists graced the stage of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts before making their way over to the Filene Center. Check out just a few of the virtual concerts from these talented stars before seeing them live at Wolf Trap!
Brittney Spencer
Brittney Spencer is a country singer from Baltimore, MD with a free spirit and standout ability to mold life, truth, and wild imagination into songs. Spencer’s passion for music started in church, and from there she found her voice in country music. Little did Spencer know, she would eventually end up collaborating with Beyoncé on her 2024 country album Cowboy Carter, which hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs. Don’t miss Spencer in her Wolf Trap debut on July 3 when she opens for Clint Black!
Black Pumas
Black Pumas burst into the music scene in 2019 with their self-titled debut that set off a reaction as rapturous as their music and Tiny Desk Concert. Though Eric Burton grew up singing church songs and Adrian Quesada listened to Hip Hop, the pair is known for their psychedelic music combined with traditional soul and R&B. You can really feel the music when you listen to the Black Pumas, and their songs “Mrs. Postman” and “Colors” will make you want to get up and dance. Check them out on July 28, but hurry before tickets sell out!
Margaret Glaspy
Singer/songwriter Margaret Glaspy has always loved music from a young age. Glaspy learned how to play the fiddle in the third grade, and from there she continued her musical journey in discovering the guitar and trombone. Not only is Glaspy instrumentally talented, but her unique voice adds to her music’s alternative vibe in the best way possible. You can watch her instrumental prowess at Wolf Trap on August 4 when she opens for The Mountain Goats and The New Pornographers.
Andrew Bird
Andrew Bird creates alternative indie, folk, swing, jazz, blues, and dance music using his skills in whistling, loop and effects pedals, and more. He’s a man of many talents, especially when it comes to the violin. He first started playing the violin at the age of four and continues to incorporate it into his music. Bird loves what he does, and his audience is sure to feel that energy. Don’t believe it? Come see for yourself! Andrew Bird will be performing at the Filene Center on August 21.
Indigo Girls
If you love that classic folk-rock sound, the Indigo Girls are perfect for you. Group members Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been making music together since the late 1980s, after having known each other since their elementary school days. The duo will bring down the house with Melissa Etheridge during two back-to-back performances on August 24 and August 25. Don’t miss your chance to see this iconic band!
The Roots
The Roots are a dynamic group known for their improvisational performances as a house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This band takes a different approach when it comes to Hip Hop; they like to incorporate jazz and other genres to create a funky sound that will have your head bobbing. See it in their Tiny Desk Concert, then come and experience The Roots live at Wolf Trap on August 31!
Brittany Howard
Brittany Howard is paving the way for indie music! Her funky, alternative sound is one you have to experience in person. An accomplished musician both on her own and with Alabama Shakes, Howard has performed on various late-night shows, including Saturday Night Live, and has earned a Grammy Award. Most recently, she headlined Wolf Trap’s second Out & About Festival.
