Know Before You Go: Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods
Jun 14, 2024

For many families in the greater Washington, DC area, Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts has become a summer tradition. But even the most seasoned Children’s Theatre-goers can use a few reminders to make their Children’s Theatre experience the best it can be.

Here are some tips to know before you go:

Pack the essentials

Pack the Essentials

Although the Children’s Theatre stage is located mostly in the shade, it still heats up quickly in the earlier hours of the day, so it’s important to stay hydrated. In addition to bringing plenty of water and sunscreen, carry bug spray to keep the creepy, crawly critters at bay. Pro tip: Park staff always keep a cooler of water and a first aid kit on hand at the theater, in a pinch. If it rained recently, consider bringing a towel to spread out on your bench.

Know where you’re going and wear your walking shoes.

Walking Down Hill

Parking is free and located on “Gill’s Hill”; be prepared to walk down a hill to reach the Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods area. Bathrooms are located at the top and the bottom of the hill, across the meadow from the kiosk. Cart assistance is available for those who have physical challenges. Pro tip: Wolf Trap sends helpful e-mail reminders the day before each performance. Consult the GPS coordinates included in the e-mail for the most accurate directions to the Theatre.

Take advantage of the enrichment activities.

Enrichment Activities

Between artist workshops, Jr. Ranger days, and lawn games, there is always something to do at the Park. Maximize your time: pack a picnic and stay and play! Pro tip: Register early for artist workshops, space is limited. Download a copy of the child-friendly trail map for a scavenger hunt through nature!

Check for weather updates.

Children’s Theatre is located outdoors and is susceptible to inclement weather. In the event of a cancellation, patrons will receive an e-mail notification, and their tickets will be refunded automatically. Pro tip: Wolf Trap generally makes decisions on weather-related cancellations by 9:30 AM. When in doubt, consult Wolf Trap’s social media accounts before heading to the Park.

Plan ahead and save!
